A former Ottawa mayor is being officially honoured with the opening of a new pedestrian and cycling bridge.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday at the Jackie Holzman Bridge, which spans Highway 417, between Harmer Avenue South and Harmer Avenue North, near the Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus.

The new bridge, which opened for public use on September 4, connects the communities of Wellington West and the one surrounding the hospital.

“We are thrilled that this much-anticipated project has been completed on schedule,” Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said in a release. “It's an important link in our active transportation network that connects communities by offering a safe and convenient way to cross the highway by foot or by bike.”

The new bridge, which replaces the former Harmer Avenue pedestrian bridge, provides improved accessibility and features an enclosed roof, glass panels and lighting. The budget for the project totaled s $13.5-million.

Ottawa City Council approved the name of the new bridge in July, as a way of recognizing Jackie Holzman's extensive community service. Holzman, who served as mayor between 1991 and 1997, was the third woman to become mayor of Ottawa.
