After going through a challenging period of her life, singer Tara Shannon hopes her new song will inspire strength and acceptance in those that listen.
Although Shannon didn't write the song, she told The Sam Laprade Show on Sept. 20 that she connected with it immediately. Initially, she had gone to Nashville to cut a different song, but when that didn't work out, her manager played her "I Know Who I Am," and she started crying, the memory of her recently signed divorce papers still fresh in her mind.
"I don't know that I could have written it as beautifully as they did because it was still quite fresh for me," she said. "And sometimes when you're still healing from the pain a little bit, it's harder to write the song so that it comes across in a way that is connected for everybody."
Shannon explained that the song resonated with her as the lyrics are about inner strength, something that helped give her a deeper sense of self-acceptance and the ability to claim her voice. She hopes the song will remind other people going through challenging times that they can stand on their own two feet.
Shannon's new song "I Know Who I Am" was released on Sept. 23.
