One person is displaced and two cats are dead following a kitchen fire at an apartment building in the city’s east end.

Ottawa Fire Service received a 911 call from a resident reporting a kitchen fire at Appleton Drive between Meadowbrook Road and Beaverpond Drive in the Pineview neighbourhood on Thursday at about 4:45 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they confirmed smoke visible in the corridor of the fourth floor of a four storey residential building and declared a working fire.

A kitchen fire was quickly extinguished and damage was limited to the fire unit.

The fire unit will not be habitable and one resident will be displaced as a result.

Two pet cats were unable to be revived.

The fire was declared under control by about 5 p.m.

A loss stopped was declared at about 5:20 p.m.

There are no reported injuries at this time.

An Ottawa Fire investigator is currently on scene to determine the cause of the blaze.

The Canadian Red Cross and Salvation Army will both help those affected by the incident.
