Ontario legislature to be recalled August 8, Ford confirms

Premier Doug Ford is expected to hit the ground running with his new cabinet and MPPs, recalling the Ontario legislature on August 8.

Ford confirmed the news in a press conference Thursday morning regarding the Ontario gas tax cut.

The legislature is expected to sit for five weeks and Ford says they will be moving things forward.

“We will pass the budget, the great budget that Minister Bethlenfalvy put together and we’re going move things forward as quickly as possible,” said Ford.

He will be heading back to Queen’s Park with 83 Progressive Conservative MPPs, 16 more than he left with in May at the dissolution of the legislature. The PC caucus had started with 76 MPPs but had been reduced due to expulsions and resignations.

The premier announced his cabinet last week, which includes his nephew, newly-elected MPP Michael Ford, as the Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism.

Newly appointed interim NDP leader Peter Tabuns will sit as the leader of the Official Opposition when the legislature returns to join 31 MPPs.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Liberal Party will have to contend with not achieving official party status for the second election in a row after only collecting eight seats on June 2.

Steven Del Duca stepped down later that night after losing in his own riding, leaving the Liberals without a leader. It’s unclear when an interim leader will be appointed.

Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner and independent Bobbi Ann Brady will round out the rest of the seats.
