Ontario reporting 1,167 COVID-19 hospitalizations while Ottawa sees drop in cases

By CityNews Ottawa

Ontario is reporting 1,167 people in hospital with COVID-19 on May 8, down from the 1,563 hospitalizations revealed one day earlier.

That's a decrease of 396, though not all facilities report data on the weekends. Ontario is reporting 207 people in intensive care units (ICUs) today, a slight increase from the 204 reported the previous day.

The province is reporting 10 more deaths linked to COVID-19 today, and health officials say one of those deaths is from an earlier date and part of a data cleanup. There are 1,938 new COVID-19 infections reported today, but access to PCR testing is limited. The scientific director of Ontario's panel of COVID-19 advisers has said multiplying the daily case count by 20 would give a more accurate picture.

Public Health Ontario has Ottawa Public Health (OPH) reporting 59 new cases, down from yesterday's reported 75.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit has 30 new cases, down from the previous day's 35.

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has 36 new cases, an increase from the 30 cases reported yesterday.

And the Renfrew County and District Health Unit has 16 new cases, down from 29 cases reported the day before.

OPH no longer releases local data over the weekends. Those statistics will be released on the following Monday.
