Orléans MPP calls for provincial change that would target Councillor Chiarelli

By OttawaMatters Staff

The MPP for Orléans is calling on the provincial legislature to take action on elected officials who commit serious misconduct.

Stephen Blais says after the integrity commissioner's second report into College Ward councillor Rick Chiarelli highlighted misconduct, Ottawa city council is limited in its punishment.

Blais told Queens Park it is time for elected officials to be held accountable.

“In any other workplace, a person who harassed and abused employees and coworkers in this way would lose their job. They would lose their title. They would lose their position of authority,” said the Orleans MPP.

Blais called on the province to take action and create a way to punish elected officials who abuse the system.

Ontario's minister of municipal affairs and housing, Steve Clark, has already stated he is not in favour of changing the provincial law.

Chiarelli, meanwhile, continues to deny all allegations against him and says he will be refraining from commenting on the situation until a hearing, which is set for January 13, 2021.
