Ottawa firefighters deal with fuel hazards while tackling overnight fire outside Stittsville

By Alex Black

Firefighters worked around a number of hazards while tackling an overnight fire outside Stittsville.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to an unoccupied structure on Moonstone Road, near Willowlea Road, just before 2 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24, after multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a large fire and explosions.

Flames could be seen from a distance and a working fire was declared while responding crews were on route to the scene.

According to OFS, a large commercial shop with various fuel sources inside had caught fire, and there were two large diesel tanks outside the structure that required constant cooling.

Due to the amount of fire spread and fuel on the scene, firefighters initiated a defensive attack, and with no hydrants in the area, water was shuttled in from a fill site.

The fire was declared under control at 3:14 a.m. and there were no injuries reported.

A fire investigator has been dispatched to the scene to determine the cause.
