Ottawa man charged in New Year’s Day murder in North Bay

An Ottawa man has been charged in connection with a murder in North Bay in the early morning hours of New Year's Day. 

Around 2:30 a.m., on Friday, January 1, the North Bay Police Service responded to reports of a suspected stabbing. The stabbing victim, a man whose identity has not been released, was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

According to police, the suspect in this case attended a social gathering before the stabbing, where a verbal argument turned violent. Two women were assaulted during the argument and, according to police, needed medical assistance. 

It's believed the accused then left the gathering and encountered the victim on a nearby street.

Ghislain Nsengiyumva, 20, of Ottawa, has been charged with:

  • Second degree murder
  • Uttering threats to cause death
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Assault (two counts)

He remains in custody while awaiting a bail hearing at the North Bay Courthouse.
