Ottawa’s Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s closing all locations after 43 years in business

By Mike Vlasveld

After more than four decades in business, Ottawa toy shop Mrs. Tiggy Winkle's will be no more.

In a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon, an announcement by the store detailed that not only would its Richmond Road location in Westboro Village be shuttered by the end of this week, but its flagship Bank Street location would be shutting down too.

“After much consideration and heavy hearts, Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s will be closing all our stores including our last remaining location in The Glebe next month,” reads the post.

“Oh noooooo… as a Glebe resident and regular shopper I was so relieved the Glebe store was staying open,” wrote Katy Swan in response to Mrs. Tiggy Winkle's announcement. “Birthday parties for kids in the Glebe will not be the same without at least half the gifts coming from Tiggy's. Bank St. will not be the same without your store as an anchor. So sorry to see you go.”

Patty Taggart added, “I'm truly truly sorry & sad to see this news. I am sure this has been a very hard decision for you & your family. You have created a wonderful business and the children will have so many incredible memories of visiting you. I wish you all the best and know I am heart broken for you.”

The store is expected to offer sales and activities over the next few weeks.

“We hope to put up a memory wall where customers can write down their good bye messages and see some fun pictures of our store throughout its history,” says the Facebook note by Mrs. Tiggy Winkle's.

The toy store opened in 1977 in The Glebe and eventually opened up other locations in Bayshore, Rideau and Orleans shopping centres, as well as 315 Richmond Road.

No reason has been given for the closure.
