Ottawa Public Health sharing the ‘Blunt Facts’ about marijuana use

By Jenn Pritchard

With the legalization of marijuana less than a month away, Ottawa Public Health has launched a new information campaign that will help clear up some common misconceptions.

Cleverly dubbed Blunt Facts, the campaign is focused on the effects of the drug on young people along with tips for using it responsibly and legally.

Gillian Connelly, Manager of Healthy Communities explained that they have three messages to get across.

“Cannabis can slow your reaction time and impair your ability to drive safely, so we're encouraging all residents to plan a safe ride if they choose to use cannabis,” she explained. “Inhaling cannabis smoke can harm lungs so we're encouraging individuals to choose other ways to use and finally that using cannabis as a teenager can change the way the brain grows and how it works.”

OPH wants parents to start a dialogue with their teenagers about marijuana using tips and tools from the Blunt Facts campaign.

Connelly said that from a health promotions standpoint, Ottawa Public Health is ready to deal with all the health related questions that may come along with the legalization of marijuana.

The Blunt Facts campaign also includes a quiz for young cannabis users to determine whether or not they have a problem.

The site also includes links to addiction resources.
