Ottawa ringette athlete off to Canada Winter Games for Team Ontario

By CityNews Ottawa

Rachel Steckly has been playing ringette since she was three-years-old. Now, the Carleton University student is off to the Canada Winter Games to compete for Team Ontario.

“I'm super excited. Its my first time at the Winter Games,” said Steckly on The Sam Laprade Show. “This is the biggest competition I've ever been to.”

Ringette is a relatively recent addition to the Winter Games schedule, having been added for the 1991 games in Prince Edward Island.

This year P.E.I. is hosting for the second time and the sport is returning to the island province that introduced it to the Winter Games.

Heading to P.E.I is an added bonus to participating in Canada's biggest winter sports competition for Steckly. With close family in the province, she's excited to have them in the stands cheering her on.

“I have a lot of family in PEI. It'll be the first time they've ever seen me play,” Steckly said.

The Games start on Feb. 18 and ringette is one of the first competitions spectators will get to enjoy. The ringette tournament starts Feb. 19, with the gold medal game slated for Feb. 25.

Steckly's first game for Team Ontario is at 3 p.m. AST against Team Saskatchewan.
