Ottawa’s RCGT Park could see future transit-oriented redevelopment

By Mike Vlasveld

The City of Ottawa is exploring different ideas when it comes to making better community use of Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton (RCGT) Park.

A 10-year lease, which began on January 1, 2021, acknowledges that the stadium be a shared-use facility between the city and its private leaseholder. The private leaseholder is a partnership between Sam Katz, owner of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, and the Ottawa Sport and Entertainment Group, for the use of the Ottawa Baseball Stadium.

The facility has been identified by city council as a potential site for transit-oriented redevelopment.

Staff from the city's Planning, Infrastructure and Economic Development department, with support from Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services, will work with all interested members of Council, local and city-wide community groups, provincial and national organizations and other key stakeholders to develop a vision for use and redevelopment of the site.

A city memo, released Thursday, February 25, says visioning sessions will include identifying opportunities for increased year-round community, public, private and commercial usage of the Ottawa Stadium and opportunities to attract a more diverse mix of sport, cultural and community uses.

A final community visioning report is expected to be completed prior to the start of the formal secondary planning process, which is scheduled to begin in late 2021.
