Those looking to pick up a new hobby this summer can always try out Parks Canada’s Learn-to-Paddle canoe clinics in Ottawa.

Parks Canada is inviting beginner paddlers to head down to Hartwells Locks in Ottawa for 90-minute lessons during the summer that will be offered in both French and English.

The clinics take place from Tuesday to Saturday up until August 27, 2022.

“Our experiences paddle team will introduce participants to basic techniques for paddling and controlling a canoe in calm water along the Rideau Canal National Historic Site of Canada,” an announcement from Parks Canada says. “Participants will be given a chance to get into a canoe with trained staff to practice their skills in a safe and fun environment.”

Registrants will have access to experienced instructors, canoes and pales, a personal floatation device and a small water proof bag for storing their personal items.

“These are engaging, fun and informative sessions for the public to learn a new skill and get more comfortable on the water,” David Britton, director of Ontario Waterways, says in a statement. “This program is a perfect example of one of Parks Canada’s mandates, opening doors to places of discovery and learning, reflection and recreation — all while appreciating the beautiful  scenery that can be found on the Rideau Canal.”
