Petition to close shelters now gone at ‘SaveTheMarket.ca’

By Mike Vlasveld

A petition, calling for the closure of shelters in the Byward Market, no longer exists.

The author of SaveTheMarket.ca Patrick O'Shaughnessy has replaced it with a message on the web page, claiming that his petition was never in favor of the destruction of shelters, and was not a direct challenge to homelessness in the area.

“I believe deeply in providing a hand out and up to those in need,” reads O'Shaughnessy's new message.  “In fact, the point of this whole thing is to find better solutions that challenge the existing model and many were presented in comments.”
