Plenty going on for parents still scrambling this March Break

By Mike Vlasveld

There's no shortage of things to do this March Break in Ottawa.

Marketing Coordinator with Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services at the City of Ottawa Bart Cormier was on 1310 NEWS' The Rick Gibbons Show, Monday.

He said there are still some open spaces at City of Ottawa-run March Break day camps. Summer camp registration is underway too.

Cormier suggests public swimming pools and gyms as great places that will keep kids busy for cheap.

Public skating is also open at Lansdowne, Ottawa City Hall and Ben Franklin Place in Nepean. Those rinks are cooled, so they will keep running until temperatures hit 10 C.

“Not many people realize, but there is a city facility at Mooney's Bay Park that takes care of 5 km of groomed, well-lit, ski trails for cross country skiiing,” said Cormier. “They rent skis on site, they arrange for lessons. I know downhill skiing, especially if your kids are a little bit younger might be a little bit intimidating, but with cross country skiing you can go out, do a little loop — it's a really neat way to work up a sweat and burn off some energy.”

The Ottawa Public Library recently introduced musical instrument rentals. Cormier explained that there are a lot of free, drop-in classes.

As far as a few of the activities that Ottawa's museums are offering this week: The Canadian Museum of Nature has a special butterfly exhibit, but that requires buying tickets in advance; The Canadian Museum of History has an interactive Dreamworks exhibit geared toward kids; and the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum is doing maple syrup demonstrations this week, along with lessons on pigs, rabbits and calves. It will also host a presentation on songs and stories of lumberjacks this Saturday.
