Rain record set as break from wet weather arrives

By Mike Vlasveld

Capital region residents can soon expect to see clear skies, after a start to the week that has produced mass amounts of rain and concerns of localized flooding.

Meteorologist with the Weather Network Doug Gillham told 1310 NEWS' The Rick Gibbons Show, over the last week, some areas around the Ottawa Valley have seen rain totals which compare to those of a one or two-month period.

“We're seeing reports as high as 150 mm for the week,” explained Gillham. “So when you get that much over a couple of days, that becomes a problem, obviously, with flooding and negative consequences to agriculture.”

The average amount of rainfall usually seen at the Ottawa International Airport through July is 92 mm.

Gillham expected the heavy rainfall to clear up into Wednesday evening, but said there is still a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm before it completely wraps up.

He added that the Ottawa region may see spotty showers this weekend, paired with some below-seasonal temperatures.
