Members of the Satanic Temple plan to hold a "black mass" in a ByWard Market bar this weekend.

The ritual, which has been described as an un-baptism, is scheduled for Saturday evening at The Koven, a heavy metal bar on Murray Street.

Saturday's ritual is believed to be the first organized public black mass in Canadian history.

Ottawa's archbishop, Terrence Prendergast, has publicly denounced the ritual as blasphemous and has urged Ottawa's Catholics to pray.

An online petition urges city officials, the police and others to, "use their authority to stop this hateful, sacrilegious and offensive event from taking place."

The petition has gathered more than 4,900 online signatures.
