School Bus Snow

As morning windchills as cold as -41 C whipped the Ottawa Valley, school bus operators decided it was just too cold and windy for children to be standing outside waiting for buses, Monday morning.

All school buses in Ottawa are running, but school buses in areas outside the city are cancelled. All schools remain open.

An extreme cold warning has been issued by Environment Canada, because of bitter cold and windchills.

"Exposed skin can freeze in as little as ten minutes," said Jill Taylor, 1310 NEWS meteorologist. Windchill values were expected to stay aorund -27 C for much of the day on Monday. "So very, very dangerous if you're outdoors for longer periods of time without adequate protection."

The extreme cold has posed a challenge for road-clearing crews; the temperatures are so cold that road salt doesn't work.

"Salt will work well up to -15 C to -18 C," said Luc Gagne, road services manager, City of Ottawa. "After that, it just doesn't work as well."

Gagne says his crews are using a mixture of salt and grit to add traction to the roads -- many of which remained snow-covered, Monday morning.

At the airport, some flights to Toronto and Montreal were cancelled, along with some Monday morning arrivals from the Maritimes. Most flights were listed as arriving or departing on time.
