Teachers being encouraged to play and experiment with technology

By Mike Vlasveld

Local teachers are learning how to implement coding into their classrooms through an event at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa.

Code Create Teach, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, is being put on by Kids Code Jeunesse in partnership with Lighthouse Labs. This inaugural edition will set in motion a national campaign of free, full-day workshops that will provide Canadian Kindergarten to Grade 12 educators with the tools to incorporate the basics of computational thinking and coding inside and outside the classroom.

With 26 workshops in every province and territory, Code Create Teach will give educators the skills and confidence they need to inspire students to tinker, play and experiment with technology; to become makers rather than consumers of their digital world.

Code Create Teach, among other KCJ projects, is funded by a $6-million commitment from the federal government's CanCode program. About 70,000 children and 2,000 teachers from across the country will have the opportunity to receive training in 21st century digital skills.
