A local 13-year-old is hoping to raise $200,000 that will go towards a travel incubator at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) ahead of his birthday.
Logan Hussein was born at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital (QCH), but he had a collapsed lung. He had to be transported in a travel incubator to CHEO and remained in the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) for nine days.
Nearly 12 years later, Hussein decided to create a fundraiser to raise $200,000 for a travel incubator, something he hopes will help people who need it. Logan and his mom joined The Sam Laprade Show on Nov. 2 and explained the importance of his birthday fundraiser.
“I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for all the doctors and nurses there,” he said. “So, as a thank you to all of them, in lieu of gifts at my birthday, I've asked for donations towards CHEO.”
The fundraiser has been ongoing for years and so far, the campaign has raised over $100,000. Logan explained that this year his family will be having an in-person celebration for his 14th birthday, which he said will include games, food, magicians, and balloon artists—something he is looking forward to. He is expecting to reach his fundraising goal by his birthday on Nov. 26.
But his fundraising efforts won't stop there.
Next year, Logan plans to raise money for kids' mental health resources at CHEO.
“I mean, it's just as important as physical health, if not a bit more,” he said. “But it's taken a hit because of COVID, so I'm just trying to bring a bit more awareness to that.”
