Temporary overdose prevention site opens in Chinatown

By OttawaMatters Staff

A new overdose prevention site is open in Ottawa's Chinatown.

The Somerset West Community Health Centre announced Wednesday that the provincial government approved the new new temporary site, located at 55 Eccles Street. That is the current needle exchange site.

Officials said the overdose prevention site is a smaller version of a supervised injection site, but still designed to address opioid-related deaths from overdose.

The Chinatown location will feature four stations and be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every weekday.

Services provided at the new site include test-strips to check drugs for the presence of fentanyl, naloxone to intervene in a potential overdose, and referrals to support and treatment.
