Thousands of Ottawa families to make use of Snowsuit Fund this season (VIDEO)

On average, 17,000 snowsuits are given out to those in need every year in Ottawa.

The Snowsuit Fund depot was buzzing as the 37th annual campaign got underway, Wednesday.

Every year, thousands of snowsuits are handed out to families in need, many of them new Canadians experiencing winter for the first time.

New chair of the Snowsuit Fund, Ottawa Police Inspector Mark Ford, handed out the first snowsuit of the season to Solimon on Wednesday morning, who's mother Wafa is a volunteer.

Ford explained that the need for the Snowsuit Fund is critical, especially as the capital of Canada tends to be quite cold.

"This is one less stress, that we're able to support families who may not be in a position to purchase them and it just helps them out," he said.

Throughout the campaign, donations can be made at local Canadian Tire locations, Brown's Cleaners stores or at the depot at 225 Donald St.

The depot is open every Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
