The region covered by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) is not among those permitted to reopen schools this week.

Online learning will continue for students in the EOHU region until the provincial government determines COVID-19 rates have decreased enough for in-person classes to safely resume.

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, the medical officer of health for the EOHU, says while the news is disappointing for many families, the evidence supports the government's decision to keep schools closed for now.

According to Dr. Roumeliotis, the local positivity rate, the weekly rate of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population, the high number of outbreaks, and the increase in COVID-related hospitalizations indicate there is still a high level of community transmission.

As of last week, the EOHU region was among the top 10 health unit regions in the province with the highest transmission rates.

Dr. Roumeliotis is asking all residents to continue working together and follow public health guidelines to reduce the number of cases.
