Transit relief coming to Barrhaven, councillor pledges

By Jason White

Changes coming this week to some key bus routes in Barrhaven aim to address a wave of complaints about congestion from commuters who work downtown.

Barrhaven transit riders have been dealing with congestion for the better part of a year — something many blame on the removal of some express routes in the lead-up to the opening of the Confederation Line.

“I cannot tell you how many complaints I have received,” said Barrhaven Councillor Jan Harder. “It has been overwhelming.”

There are some changes and projects being looked at to make things better, in the long-term. For now, OC Transpo is adding trips to the 95 and Connexion Route 277, to try to alleviate the congestion.

“About 60 per cent of the people who work downtown take the bus from Barrhaven,” Harder told 1310 NEWS. “That's important to keep those customers; I don't want people going out to purchase another car.”

Harder thinks the changes will result in significant improvements to her ward's transit service into and out of downtown, but acknowledges that winter weather can affect transit schedules and reliability.
