Two Gatineau Park beaches closed due to blue-green algae bloom

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Two beaches in Gatineau Park have been shut down due to the presence of blue-green algae.

The National Capital Commission announced the closures of Parent Beach and Breton Beach at Philippe Lake on Thursday, saying that a bloom of cyanobacteria was observed near the edge of the beaches.

This also means the Philippe Lake Boat rental kiosk, as well as the boat launch, will be closed.

The NCC says its decision to close the beaches was a preventative measure.

The beaches will not re-open until all public safety requirements have been met.

Smiths Beach at Philippe Lake (reserved for campers), Blanchet and O’Brien beaches at Meech Lake, La Pêche Lake beach and Leamy Lake Park beach remain open.
