UPDATE: Ottawa crews tackle structure fire near King Edward

By CityNews Ottawa

No one was injured after a structure fire on the second floor of the Shepherd of Good Hope's emergency shelter on King Edward Avenue off of Murray Street and Clarence Street in downtown Ottawa

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, crews responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a fire on the second floor of a multi-occupancy structure.

Crews arrived on the scene and started extinguishing a fire that started inside a locker.  Firefighters extinguished the main portion of the fire around 10:35 a.m. and helped an individual in a wheelchair evacuate the structure safely.

Two full searches of the structure were completed and there were no occupants inside. Once the smoke was cleared, crews discovered low levels of carbon monoxide on the second floor, where the fire started.

No one was injured and a fire investigator was dispatched to the scene.

“We want to extend a great big thank you to Ottawa Fire Service and our quick-thinking team who ensured a small fire, that broke out on the second floor of our emergency shelter was safely contained,” a statement from Shepherd of Good Hope officials said. “We are so grateful that none of our service users, staff team, or community partners sustained any physical injuries.

“While we help find temporary places for these individuals to stay, we are also working to help them replace some of their belongings lost in the fire,” the statement said.

The shelter is accepting donations of duffle bags, backpacks and weather appropriate men's clothing.
