UPDATED: Ottawa continues to dip in amount of new COVID-19 cases; Ontario now represents one-third of Canada’s total cases

A slight increase in new COVID-19 cases in the province has officially brought Ontario over another threshold, while Ottawa's number of new cases continue to dip.

The Ontario government is reporting 2,417 cases on Sunday— that’s up over two per cent since yesterday.

Ottawa Public Health says Ottawa represents 76 of those cases — down from the 87 reported the day before.

The numbers would bring Ottawa’s total cases count to 12,929, according to the Ontario government.

There are 37 people in hospital with the virus, six of which are in the ICU.

OPH isn't reporting any new deaths for Sunday, keeping the death toll at 419.

Active case are now at 939, down from the 988 reported on Saturday.

Resolve cases in the city now stand at 11,571.

One new outbreak is being reported in a healthcare institution, bringing that total number of active outbreaks to 34. Meanwhile, two additional outbreaks have been declared in the community, meaning there are now eight active outbreaks.

Ottawa Remains in the red zone.

These new numbers officially bring Ontario’s total number of cases since the pandemic started to over the 255,000 threshold (255,002, to be exact).

With Canada now tallying in with 742,531 total cases since the pandemic started, according to the Government of Canada, this means Ontario's number of total cases account for about 34 per cent of Canada's overall total.

This is the fifth day Ontario has reported new cases numbers in the 2,000s.

Of the new cases, 77 are among kids ages nine to 13; with 65 being teens ages 14 to 17; and 38 of which are among children ages four to eight.

That means the four to seven cohort accounts for almost 7.5 per cent of the day's reported cases.

There are also 50 new deaths in Ontario, bringing the total death toll to 5,803.

Since Saturday, 2,759 more cases have resolved — bringing that total to 225,046.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit reports 15 new cases, which is down from the 29 reported yesterday.

Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, however, is reporting only two new cases, down from the four reported on Saturday.

And Renfrew County and District Health Unit isn’t reporting any new cases for the second day.

As of 8 pm. Saturday, Health Minister Christine Elliott says 280,573 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.

There were also 48,947 tests completed by the provincial government since Saturday — which works out to about a 23 per cent drop in tests since Saturday’s report.

Lastly, the positivity rate of the province now stands at 4.2 per cent.
