Long-time Ottawa resident Alex Osorio plans to tackle the issues of community safety and downtown revitalization as a city council candidate for the Rideau-Vanier ward.

Osorio told The Sam Laprade Show with guest host Derick Fage on Friday, August 5, that no one should feel threatened or unsafe walking down the street, especially when it's dark earlier in the winter.

"We do want to focus on the fact that security, especially in our downtown market and in our neighbourhoods, has to increase," he said. "So that's one of the things that I plan on addressing is making sure that we provide safety and security for all our citizens."

He also would like to see more local businesses return to the downtown core, adding that a way to do this is by providing a program that would incentivize companies to be downtown and make downtown shopping more accessible to tourists and citizens.

"It's Canada's capital. It should be the mecca of Ottawa downtown," he said.
