Woman in stable condition following fire in Heron Gate area

By Dani-Elle Dubé

One woman was treated by paramedics following a basement fire in a south Ottawa neighbourhood.

Just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 26, Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received multiple 911 calls reporting a fire in a row of seven houses on Heatherington Road, near Albion Road North in the Heron Gate area.

One 911 caller reported smoke coming out of the backdoor of the unit and another caller reported that someone was still inside.

The first two crews arrived on scene just after 1 p.m. and confirmed heavy black smoke coming from the back door and a working fire was declared.

One crew entered the home to start a fast attack on the fire while the other started evacuating the adjoining units.

The crew extinguishing the fire encountered high heat conditions in the basement and zero visibility from the large amount of smoke. An additional crew began searching the home for anyone still inside.

The entire structure was searched and no victims were found.

The fire was under control by 1:30 p.m. and one adult was in the care of paramedics for non-fire related injuries.

Paramedics confirm that a woman had been treated for minor smoke inhalation and was transported to The Ottawa Hospital. She remains in stable condition.

Crews vented out all the smoke using a small window in the basement.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the basement and none of the adjoining units were affected by the fire.

A fire investigator has been dispatched to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
