Atlético Ottawa players to self-isolate upon return from training in Spain

Ottawa's new pro soccer club is on its way home from training in Spain, but that means its players will have to go straight into self-isolation.

Atlético Ottawa kicked off its training camp in Spain on March 11, one month ahead of when the Canadian Premier League (CPL) season is expected to get underway.

The team was making use of its big brother Atlético de Madrid's facilities.

Since the beginning of camp, COVID-19 has spread farther across Europe and around the world. Spain declared a state of emergency on Saturday and 288 deaths due to the coronavirus on Sunday.

A statement from Atlético Ottawa on Monday said its players and coaching staff are on their way back to Ottawa.

“Upon their return they will take all necessary medical and isolation protocols,” reads the statement.

The CPL says it is maintaining consistent dialogue, both internally and externally, and as more information becomes available, it will continue to provide public updates regarding potentially rescheduling or postponing matches as it moves toward the season opening date of April 11.
