Ottawa 67’s reflect on bonds formed with teammates and fans after special season

By Mike Vlasveld

“We're not a hockey team, we're a hockey family.”

Those were the words of Ottawa 67's goalie Mikey DiPietro as players and coaches came in to clean out their lockers and talk to members of the media for the last time in the 2018-2019 season, Wednesday.

In a season which many consider one of the best in franchise history, the Ottawa 67's fell just two wins shy of its ultimate goal of winning an OHL championship.

After reeling off 14 straight playoff wins — a new Ontario Hockey League record — the team fell in four straight contests, conceding the league title to the Guelph Storm.

Ottawa won 50 games for the first time in franchise history this past season, collecting a franchise best 106 points.

Head Coach Andre Tourigny said it's going to be tough to see some of their overage players move to the next stage of their careers.

“What hurt the most is the quality of individuals that we have in that room,” explained the coach. “We [are set to] lose really special [people], and that sucks because those guys are really special and I would have really enjoyed two more weeks [coaching] them.”
