Senators coach Smith: Talbot day-to-day with injury but ‘nothing serious’

By CityNews Staff

Cam Talbot is dealing with an undisclosed injury, but the Ottawa Senators goaltender is not expected to be out of the lineup for long.

Head coach D.J. Smith confirmed to reporters that Talbot is “day-to-day” and will not play in a pre-season contest against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, Oct. 1. Mads Søgaard is getting the start in net.

Smith believes Talbot will return to the ice soon though.

“We’ll put [Søgaard] in tomorrow and then he should be back after that,” Smith said. “It’s nothing serious, but you wouldn’t make him play in this kind of scenario.”

Smith added: “Just got a puck under the equipment. … In the regular season, he could probably play but there’s just no point [in the pre-season].”

The Senators acquired Talbot from the Minnesota Wild during the summer for fellow netminder Filip Gustavsson.

Talbot, 35, has won 201 games in his NHL career with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames and Minnesota. He earned a career-high 42 wins during the 2016-17 season with the Oilers setting a franchise single-season record.
