UPDATE: Doctor facing first degree murder after suspicious deaths at Hawkesbury hospital

By CityNews Ottawa

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is charging a doctor with first degree murder, as it investigates multiple suspicious deaths at the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital.

Officers were called to the hospital, Thursday, March 25, where they made an arrest.

OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson says the investigation is in its initial stages and it is expected to be going on “for some time.” Members of the OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit are assisting with the case.

Brian Nadler, 35, of Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, Quebec, has been charged with one count of first degree murder.

His lawyer Alan Brass says, “Dr. Nadler maintains his innocence and the charges against him will be rigorously defended.”

Police say there is currently no risk to public or patient safety, and routine activity at the hospital will not be affected by the police investigation.

The Hawkesbury and District General Hospital says that all of Nadler's privileges at the hospital have been revoked.

“We want to reassure our patients, their families and the community at large that the hospital site is safe,” a statement from the hospital says.”We continue to deliver our programs in a professional and safe environment.”

The hospital also says that it is reaching out to the families affected, and is providing its physicians and staff with employee assistance and post-traumatic counselling.

Nadler has been remanded into custody until his next scheduled court appearance, on April 6.

If anyone has information regarding the investigation, they are asked to call the Hawkesbury OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
