Arrest made and stolen property found following tornado in Gatineau

By Mike Vlasveld

One person is facing a charge, after Gatineau police officers found stolen items, believed to have been taken in the aftermath of the September 21 tornadoes, being sold online.

Last Saturday, a break and enter charge was filed at 35 Tassé Street.

In the days following that incident, the victim in the case again contacted the SPVG to report having found its advertised lost goods in an online classifieds site.

On Monday, police were called to intervene on Rue Lucien-Brault for a completely different matter.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers say they found a variety of items that would likely have been stolen from the disaster area as a result of the tornado, and one officers recognized some of the items as advertised online.

A search warrant was also obtained and several items were seized.

Three arrests were made at that scene, but two were released. The third has also been released, but on a promise to appear in court and will have to answer a charge of concealment.

Investigators have since been busy linking the seized items to ongoing files. Some people may expect to be contacted to allow identification of property and handing over to homeowners.

The SPVG invites anyone who has been a victim of theft in that same area, who has not yet reported the event, to report to the nearest police station or to contact the Police Service at 819 246-0222.

The investigation is still ongoing, it is possible that further arrests could take place.
