Car rams into Vanier home after police chase

By Alex Robinson

A police chase ended with a driver hitting a home in Vanier early Sunday.

Ottawa police said the driver fled when officers tried to pull him over in the area of Cote Street and Richelieu Avenue at around 1:09 a.m.

The driver, who was a 39-year-old man, lost control a short distance away and slammed into a house on Jean Talon Street, police said. The car hit a wall by a child's bedroom, but luckily no one was home at the time of the incident.

Police arrested the driver, who was taken to Montfort Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

It was the second time in just over two years that a vehicle has crashed into the house. In 2016, two people were taken to hospital after a pick up truck struck the home.

The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate the incident. The SIU probes any incidents involving police where death or injury occur.

The crash has displaced a family of four.
