A 29-year-old Ottawa man is facing a couple of charges after an act of vigilantism in the Lincoln Heights area.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has been investigating a number of thefts from vehicles in the area since the beginning of October.

Officers say a man accosted a woman on October 31, who he believed was responsible for breaking into vehicles. Upon further investigation by police, it was determined not to be the case and the woman was released.

The man is facing charges of:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Uttering threats

He was released on an undertaking.

Police are reminding residents that acting independently in this way is illegal, and can put themselves and other residents in danger. Anyone who sees a crime in progress is asked to call 911.
