Charges laid after woman randomly assaulted, hijab forcefully removed in Hintonburg

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is laying charges after it says a woman was randomly assaulted and had her hijab forcefully removed while walking down Hinton Avenue North near Armstrong Street in Hintonburg.

Officers were called to the scene on October 6, around 4:15 p.m., but were unable to find the suspect at that time. 

Hate and Bias Crime Unit investigators have since identified the suspect and charged a 62-year-old Ottawa woman with: 

  • Hate-motivated assault
  • Hate-motivated mischief

The suspect had already been detained on an outstanding matter. She is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, October 26.
