Don’t venture onto the ice: Ottawa police

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Ottawa police would like to remind folks to stay off the ice — an announcement that comes after a 11-year-old boy in Milton died falling through thin ice.

They say to exercise caution when entering onto frozen bodies of water due to the unknown thickness of ice and the presence of fast moving water in some locations.

“Despite recent temperatures, many bodies of water will not have developed thick enough ice to support recreational use,” police said in a statement. “Falling through the ice is a significant hazard due to the risk of the sudden onset of hypothermia which is a medical emergency.”

Ottawa Fire Services also says they've responded to multiple calls over the past 24 hours of people travelling on dangerous ice.

They're asking people to keep their pets on a leash around bodies of water and if someone is seen in distress, to call 911.

Halton police were called to a storm water management pond in Milton Saturday afternoon when they received a call of two boys falling through the ice.

The one boy died but one was able to escape the freezing water after trying to help the other boy.
