Festive Mega-RIDE program held in the capital

By Jenn Pritchard

The holiday party season is in full swing and police are out making sure drivers stay sober while behind the wheel.

The first Festive Mega RIDE event of the season got underway on Thursday night.

This is the first time that the program has been held since marijuana became legal.

Constable Pat Auger explained that the new laws, don't change the rules for drivers.

“Well, really nothing has changed, RIDE what we're doing is trying to detect person's driving under the influence of alcohol or any type of drug.”

Officers from Ottawa Police, the OPP, the RCMP and Military Police will take part in the RIDE program – which can be held at any time.

“We conduct RIDE checks (in the) day time, night time, weekend or weekday,” said Auger. “We're out there trying to be visable at any time and anywhere possible.”

The next two Mega RIDE events will be held on December 13 and 20.
