Gatineau police chief calling it a career

After 35 years as a member of the service, Mario Harel will hang up the uniform and badge for good.

Ville de Gatineau Police Service Chief Mario Harel is retiring.

He made the announcement to the members of the City Council of Gatineau on Tuesday morning, that he will retire on September 1.

Harel has spent nearly 35 years on the police force. 

Prior to being appointed Chief of the SPVG, Harel spent time working with a number of different police units, including the Criminal Investigation Bureau, as well as other sections dedicated to road safety, special events and crime prevention.

Harel has been the Chief of the SPVG since June 23, 2007.

Since August 2016, he has also been President of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. His term at CCPA ends August 13, 2018. He previously served as Vice President from 2013 to 2016.

Harel has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Quebec Police Directors for nine years.

The chief graduated from a management program for senior executives at HEC Montréal.
