Hawkesbury OPP calls Canada Road Safety Week a success

By CityNews Ottawa

Canada Road Safety Week (CRSW) was dubbed a success by the Hawkesbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Despite the record setting storm that ripped through eastern Ontario on Saturday, May 21, Hawksebury OPP officers responded to 130 calls for assistance. Officers were out on patrol and focused on enforcing the following offences:

  • Alcohol/drug-impaired driving
  • Distracted/inattentive driving
  • Aggressive driving (including speeding)
  • Driver fatigue
  • Lack of seat belt use

The CRSW is a national safety initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police that took place from May 17 to May 23. Police agencies across Canada took part in the initiative in an attempt to make all highways safer by use of enforcement and education.

As part of the education process, the Hawkesbury OPP had three information sessions before CRSW began that offered citizens the opportunity to ask questions about electric bikes, off-road vehicles and boat safety.
