Late night Gatineau Park crash claims two lives

By Mike Vlasveld

Two people in their early 20's are dead after crashing a vehicle on Champlain Parkway near Huron lookout in the Gatineau Park.

Emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle crash just before midnight, Tuesday. A man and woman were found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is investigating the specific circumstances of the collision, but said speed is likely a contributing factor.

To facilitate the work of first responders at scene, the RCMP is asking the public to avoid the area until further notice. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP National Division Operational Communications Centre at 613-952-4200.

The RCMP is also reminding motorists that the speed limit in Gatineau Park is 60 km/h. It encourages motorists to be very cautious and vigilant, especially at night, as parkways can be dangerous, due to the winding configuration, weather, but also because of the many animals that may be out of the woods looking for food.

Police are not releasing the names of the two victims at this time as the families are still being notified.
