Ottawa Police Service launches deputy chief search

By CityNews Ottawa

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) will soon begin its search for a third deputy chief.

“There has been, and continues to be, a lot of changes taking place at the Ottawa Police Service,” said Ottawa Police Services Board (OPSB) Chair Diane Deans on Friday, January 7, 2022. “The Chief [Peter Sloly] requires a strong and stable senior leadership team to assist him in shepherding those changes. The board is looking to provide increased support and stability to the chief and the service through this recruitment.”

The OPS currently has Deputy Chiefs Steve Bell and Uday Jaswal, but Jaswal has been suspended by the service with pay since March 2020 after being accused of misconduct by the Ontario Civilian Police Commission.

The OPSB has hired Odgers Berndtson, the largest executive search firm in Canada, to assist with the search.

The position will be funded using gap position funding from existing operating dollars, and the board says it will have no effect on the police budget.
