A brutal assault in the downtown core is now being investigated as the city's 12th homicide of 2018.

Police officers were called to the Christian Science Reading Room on Laurier Avenue around 1 p.m. on Thursday after a woman was discovered lying on the floor, suffering from what police describe as a 'traumatic event.'

The woman, identified by police as Elisabeth Salm, 59,  was rushed to hospital where she was initially placed on life support. Police confirmed that she had died on Friday afternoon around 3 p.m.

“We are concerned about the traumatic, the level of trauma and violence that was involved in this attack,” said Ottawa Police Service Insp. Jamie Dunlop. “The fact that it happened in the day time.”

He said that officers are taking this crime very seriously.

“Investigators are following up on all information and there is no suspect in custody at this time,” added Dunlop. “Investigators are also seeking to speak to anyone with information about people who may have had interaction with the victim on May 24th, specifically between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.”

Police do not believe that this was a hate crime.
