Quebec police break up illegal Val-des-Monts birthday party, hand out $18K in fines

It turned out to be quite an expensive birthday party for a group at a short-term rental property in Val-des-Monts, about 40 minutes north of Gatineau.

MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais officers were called to a home on H-Zurenski Road in the town on Friday, March 26, around 11:25 p.m. to investigate a possible illegal gathering.

Once at the scene, officers say they noticed several vehicles on the property and several people inside the home. Two women spoke with the police officers and mentioned that the residence was a short-term rental and that the people were there to celebrate a birthday party.

When police informed everyone that their party was unfortunately illegal, they all refused to identify themselves and asked the officers to leave and go get a warrant.

Police then came back with a warrant, all the party attendees were identified and each received a statement of offence.

All together, 12 tickets were issued for a total of $18,600.

The MRC says one of the ladies on site received an additional ticket because she refused to wear the mask and maintain a physical distance of two metres from the police officers.
