SIU clears OPP officers of Clarence-Rockland incident that left motorcyclist injured

SIU has decided not to issue any charges after a man suffered injuries when he fell from his motorcycle while being pursued by OPP in Clarence-Rockland.

The decision from the SIU came in Thursday evening, explaining that there were no grounds to believe the officers committed a criminal offence in relation to the 28-year-old man’s injury of a fracture clavicle in the October 3 incident.

According to SIU, at about 9:15 p.m., two OPP officers were in a marked cruiser travelling westbound along Raymond Street in Clarence-Rockland when they noticed the motorcycle rider had stopped on the shoulder of the road.

The officers pulled over to see if the driver needed help.

As soon as they stopped and exited the cruiser, the rider got on the bike and drover away at high speed.

The driver quickly lost control and dumped his bike in a low density residential area with a speed limit of 50 km/h.

Officers ran to the downed bike to check on the rider.

The driver was arrested but then released into the custody of attending paramedics and taken to the Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus, where he was diagnosed with a fractured clavicle.

It turns out, the driver of the motorcycle was not licensed to operate the vehicle, SIU reported. He told SIU that he had panicked and accelerated away from the officers.

It wasn't until he travelled several hundred metres when he started to decelerate, struck a north side curb and fell off the motorcycle, landing on his left shoulder.
