Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate to investigate a crash that happened over the weekend that involved an Ottawa Police Service cruiser.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, there was a collision involving a police cruiser and a vehicle at the intersection of Aviation Parkway and Privé La Cité.

An earlier report from Ottawa police said that a vehicle had rolled over and a person had to be extricated.

Ottawa paramedics said that a man and a woman were taken to Ottawa’s trauma centre. All three people involved in the crash were taken to hospital.

The driver of the civilian vehicle and the passenger remain in hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The officer was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.

The SIU says three investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
