Smiths Falls police respond to four domestic incidents in five days

The Smiths Falls Police Service is seeing an increase in calls to domestic incidents recently as officers responded to four in a five day span.

Around 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, police received a complaint of a domestic assault that had occurred the day before at a home on Main Street East. Police investigated and determined that a local man had assaulted his common law partner and damaged her property.

A 21-year-old Smiths Falls man faces the following charges:

• Domestic assault
• Mischief to property under $5,000

The man was released from custody with a future court date.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on the same day, officers were called to attend a home on Chambers Street for a report of a domestic disturbance. Police say the investigation revealed that a man had assaulted his common law partner on two separate occasions.

The 57-year-old Smiths Falls man was located, arrested and charged with following offences:

• Domestic assault (two counts)

He was released on a promise to appear in court.

Then, just after 9 a.m. on Monday, April 19, police received a complaint from a female victim, that her ex-partner was breaching his probation order conditions for unwanted contact. Police investigated and found the suspect had contacted the victim, in contravention with a probation order.

A 40-year-old Smiths Falls was located a short time later, and police say an officer was assaulted while arrested the suspect.

The man faces the following charges:

• Criminal Harassment
• Assaulting a peace officer
• Resisting arrest
• Breach of probation (two counts)

Finally, around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 21, police located and arrested a 53-year-old man from Woodlawn, Ontario, for domestic-related offences. The police investigation found the man, who is under conditions not to contact his ex-partner, tried to contact them numerous times through a third party.

The man has been charged with the following offences:

• Criminal Harassment
• Breaching a release order

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

No names have been released, as in domestic cases, the accused is not identified in order to protect the victim.
