Three levels of government pitch in for Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre expansion in Town of Renfrew

The Ma-te-Way Activity Centre in Renfrew is growing.

The community centre is receiving $6.4-million from the federal government, $5.3-million from the provincial government and $4.2-million from the Town of Renfrew, for a total of $15.9-million in funding.

The money will be used to expand the current community arena and hall to include an Indigenous Cultural Centre, add an additional ice pad, a walking track, a fitness centre, a gymnasium, and multi-purpose rooms.

“Through this incredible commitment of financial support by our federal and provincial government partners, the Town of Renfrew will see the creation of a community hub that provides a central access point for a range of much needed health, cultural, recreational, and green spaces to nourish community life,” said Renfrew Mayor Don Eady.

“Our relationship with our Algonquin friends is a long-standing one, and so I'm pleased that todays announcement also makes possible the creation of the Bonnechere Algonquin First Nation Indigenous Cultural Centre which will nurture bi-cultural awareness through the sharing of traditions, customs, values, spirituality and the life-sustaining resources of the land.”

The work is expected to begin in the summer of 2021, and be completed in 2022.
