Smiths Falls town council is condemning the behaviour of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP Randy Hillier, as he continuously flouts COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions.
Council passed a resolution on Monday, saying it doesn't condone the local MPP's anti-mask or anti-lockdown rhetoric. Hillier has been posting misinformation surrounding COVID-19 and restrictions throughout the pandemic, which previously resulted in a temporary suspension on Twitter.
The resolution echoes the Township of South Frontenac's stance on the MPP, with the township asking other municipalities in the area to condemn the behaviour.
Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow explains the public health measures in place to curb the spread of the virus are made with great contemplation, and with a full understanding of the impacts of the restrictions.
He feels not adhering to the guidelines and restrictions creates far greater risk than the impacts of rules themselves.
"We look at MPP Hillier and his -- in my mind -- reckless and irresponsible behaviour over most of this pandemic," Pankow says. "As much as we're frustrated and exhausted with the pandemic.. we're more exhausted and frustrated with his continued resistance."
Town councillor Chris McGuire feels this move also shows Smiths Falls council is standing with public health officials.
